Plans to build a new library in a car park in Plumstead are set to be given the go-ahead.
Greenwich Council wants to build a temporary library in Plumstead High Street, close to Abery Street, while Plumstead Library is renovated.
Planning permission was given for major development works to the Grade II listed library including bulldozing a building to the rear and constructing a two-storey extension.
The council says that while the building works are taking place, it is important to relocate the library.
The temporary library, which would be in use for up to two years, would be constructed out of six modular blocks.
Neighbours complained that the library would strain the parking available, but officers said nearby streets could take the extra traffic.
The site, a 24/7 car park, would lose 12 spaces, but council officers said that within 200m of the car park there was room for 250 vehicles to park.
Council officers said: “The retained library functions are recognised as a need within the local community, and its continued operation is considered to be a positive contribution to the local area and wider borough.”
It’s expected that councillors will agree to the scheme at a meeting on June 5.
