Plans to build a 19-storey tower block have been put on hold, after fears it could become a "blight" on Catford's skyline.

Located on the former greyhound track, construction for phase two of the Barratt Homes development on Catford Green is well underway.

Planning permission for the building was granted as part of the masterplan in 2008, however the developer’s application for the tower block comes after they decided on a new design approach for the site.

Lewisham councillors voted to defer taking any decision on the application during Tuesday’s planning committee, after a strong show of public opinion against the tower.

According to the plans, the building would comprise two elements - a five storey podium and a tower element of 19 storeys – which is an increase on the original design.

It is designed to provide 92 residential units of the development’s 589-home total.

The council was sent 145 letters against the plans, citing reasons such as an “ugly appearance” and fears over crime, as well as one letter in support.

One resident wrote: “Too many people will be forced into too small an area.

“It will be a breeding ground for noise pollution, crime, poor mental health and social alienation.”

There was also concerns it could become a “blight” on Catford’s skyline.

Residents submitted two petitions earlier this year with more than 550 signatures combined.

Labour Councillor Alan Hall, who proposed the deferral, said the council needs to examine the plans in a wider context.

He said: “Regeneration should not be done in a piecemeal way.

“The Strategic Planning Committee need to fully consider the objections and comments and review the site and the development's quality and appropriateness.

"Residents have clearly made their views know that they feel the need for further consultation."

Catford Green was home to the race track from 1932-2003, after which it was cleared for residential development.

A spokeswoman for the developer said: “Barratt London has noted the council's decision to defer the application and we are currently examining options for the best way to move forward with this site.”
