A 30-year-old man from Erith was killed after he was hit by a train in Abbey Wood on Saturday (May 23) night.
He died by the footbridge between Abbey Grove and Bracondale Road at around 9.30pm.
The spot where the unnamed man died
Abbey Grove resident Richard Smith said: “I think it’s sad.
“Thirty is a young age, that’s a shame to hear.”
The 68-year-old added: “I saw a train stop stationary just before the footbridge.
“That must have been where it occurred. It was on the Kent side.
“I looked out and thought it was unusual to see a train stop there for quite a while.
“He must have got over the fence, there is no way he could have jumped off the bridge.
“You would have to be some sort of athlete to do that.”
A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We were called to Abbey Wood station at 9.40pm on Saturday, May 23, to reports of a person being struck by a train.
“Colleagues from the Metropolitan Police Service and London Ambulance Service also attended, and a 30-year-old man from Erith was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The man’s death is not currently being treated as suspicious, and his family have been informed."
A Rushdene resident said: “My brother came here to visit us, and at about 10 he called and told me they were all asked to leave the train so he was waiting for the bus at the bridge.
“We did hear police but they are always around here anyway.”
