With smoke and flames being visible from miles away, 999 control operators took more than 50 calls in the early stages of the incident.
Station manager Norman Perry said: "Fire crews worked hard to bring this under control. The blaze was in an industrial area and we managed to stop it spreading to any residential homes."
No homes were affected by fire but residents were advised to close doors and windows dueot the smoke.
Firefighters have remained at the scene during the day damping down pockets of fire.
