A Charlton killer who strangled a deaf man using a steam iron cord before stealing his iPad has been convicted of murder.

Frenchman Soufiane Essabri, of Rathmore Road, stabbed and battered 30-year-old Latvian Andrejs Ivanovs during "an extraordinarily violent outburst" in December 2012.

The 23-year-old, a former flatmate of the victim's, was seen escaping out of the window and fleeing across the car park leaving a trail of blood.

Mr Ivanovs, from Kennington, had suffered multiple stab wounds to his face, neck, chest and back, and deep bruising to his head.

The bones in his neck had been fractured and the cord of the iron was still wrapped around his neck.

Essabri claimed during his trial that he had been acting a self defence.

But an Old Bailey jury today (April 7) convicted him of murder in a majority verdict.

Essabri will be sentenced on Wednesday (April 9).
